Girls Weekend at Round Top, Texas Antique Week

Sisters, daughters and friend time! Yes it was muddy from a Friday rain deluge. But. we didn't care, not one bit.

You know your dog wants one of these doggie campers!

We came, we conquered, we cluttered.

So much eye candy.  It was hard to leave, but we did bring home goodies.  I really don't buy much anymore, it is more about the sun, fun, friends and family time.

Final reveal ~ Project Light and bright.

When I say done, that means... until the next time I decide to change things up a bit.  If you have followed along, thanks for your patience.  I finally decided, I love my red couch and for now.. it stays. I will start with my two favorite changes to the rooms.  Go here to see..the new front door and "new to me" buffet.
The buffet was a Craig's List find!  Solid mahogany, 1980's Kindel buffet.  The new iron door brings in so much more light and we love the Flemish glass panes.
The dollhouse had to stay because all the grands love playing with it.
MissRaylyn loves my pink magnolia needlepoint chair.  She says she is a princess when she sits on it and we do have a tiara for her to wear.  Of course!
Hubby and I just refinished the floors.... aren't they purty?
My little grouping of crowns reminds me of Mardi Gras and my Louisiana roots.  Thankfully none of my family in Louisiana was caught up in the flood.  But, my sister is helping all over Baton Rouge and housing a displaced family.

The project began with recovering my dinning room chairs.  Then new sheer curtains and finally the door and buffet. The plan was to have the couch changed to an ivory color.  But, after shopping the house and moving things around to other rooms, the sitting room makes me happy.

Changes

Curtains - Pottery Barn
Buffet - Craig's List
Paint for Buffet - Sherwin Williams - Pure White
Door - will not name source, would not recommend them
Fabric for chairs seats - Cutting Corners, Dallas
Mirror - At Home

Buffet transformation begins....

I really stress over painting over a wooden piece of furniture.  If it has a strong family heirloom connection, I will not.  But, the buffet I wanted to replicate, could not be found new to buy.  So to Craig's list I went and found a beauty to resemble this look!
Less than Perfect Life of Bliss
I found a pretty nice cousin, don't you think?  I have already removed the hardware in the below photo, but it is exactly the same as the above picture.
This lady has long skinny legs and the length is a nice 60 inches.  The drive to pick her up was about an hour, but at a great price it was worth it.  It is a mahogany Kindel piece.  I emailed them with the information I could find printed on the buffet.  They emailed back and advised it was early 1980's.

The Sherwin Williams Pure White paint is really bright and exactly the color I wanted for this piece.
She has nice curves and is super glossy!  Did I mention the extra storage?!
So if you picked number three from my previous post, you were correct.  So, area two of "Project light and bright my front room" is taking shape.  More to come, stay tuned.

See you later ladies ....

I got some shoppin', sippin', sharing time with my sista's to do.

Here is some past FUN in no particular order.

Picnic lunches.  The pickled shrimp was first to go.

Inspiration extreme!

Found my Mom's china! And bought it! She was thrilled.

Make new friends, but keep the old.  One is silver and the other's gold.  (sorry girl scout song reference)

Eye candy everywhere you turn.

Texas is equal opportunity.

Naps included.

Since this picture, that hat has spent a winter in Richland-Chambers Lake and was found again by my son-in-law.

 Yum!

You wish you were me don't ya?!!

The story of the 100 year old table continues...

I posted in October 2010 (click below)
This story about our hundred year old table.

I realized the original pictures were taken with my old camera.  Although, I still need to make one more step up with cameras, my current one took some better shots.

Here are newer pictures of the table and a fun internet age story.

This table was originally made by my husband's Grand-Father, Lemmie.  My hubbie's Dad remembers doing his homework at this table around age 5 in 1920.  So, we know the table is 100 plus years old.

I know, I have a problem with collecting little creamers.  I have stopped.

It was handed down and down.  When my husband's Uncle's house was being emptied, it was one of the few things we took possession of.  Years later, I sanded and gave it a fresh coat of stain in 2010.

Yesterday, January 22, 2013, I received an email from someone named Carol.  A friend of hers had found my post about Ida, my husband's Grand-mother.  Carol is a relation, she is Ida's sister Mary's Grand-daughter.  I think I got that straight.  Here is a portion of the email from Carol.

A friend who is helping me with my genealogy found your blog and the entry about the table. My grandmother, Mary Ellen (Burke) Henderson was Ida's sister. I was wondering if any members of your husband's family has any information about the parents of Lawrence Burke, Ida and Mary's father. I have a lot of information about their mother's family (which I would be happy to share if anyone was interested) but little information about him.

Don't you just love the internet?  Her friend must have googled Ida's name and came up with my earlier post.  One comment later and Carol was able to send me an email through my blog.  My mother-in-law is getting all the information she can remember together for Carol.  I have some pictures of Ida that I hope to copy and send to the her as well.

Does that make my husband and Carol second cousins?   Her Grand-mother and my hubbies Grand-mother were sisters.

Thus the saga of the library table continues..... oh if that little table could talk.

100 year old Kees family table

The story of the table....

I call it a library table.  It was made over one hundred years ago by my husband's fraternal Grand-father.
Built by Lemmie Hamilton Kees early 1900's
Lemmie was married to Ida Alice Burke

Ray A. Kees remembers using the table to do his homework at age 5 in 1920.
Mrs. Ida was known to always keep a vase of fresh flowers on the table.
The table was passed to Leonard Nichols (Lynn's Uncle) in 1968,
He used the table as an end table in his living room beside his couch and recliner.
The table was passed to Lori (Diefenderfer) and Lynn Kees in 1986.
Used as a computer table and decorative table over the years.

The table had become too warn to show off the beauty of the table.
I have kept it covered with linens for the last eight years.

Time for some tender lovin' care.  I sanded lightly,

It now has some of my DNA in it.  It was over 100 degrees in the garage this day.  Sweat droplets kept dripping on the table.

and restained with provencial colored stain to match the original, light wax finish and Voila!!

I can't  believe how well I matched the stain.  I did not refinish the original knob. And even though I have fun funky knobs, I am sticking with the original for it's beautiful simplicity.

Now I can display it in all its glory, thanks Lemmie for such a wonderful gift of your handiwork and love, I'm sure many more generations will use and love this table.  I never knew you but you are still a part of our home.

I keep an index card with the history of the table in the drawer.

The first thing I put on it were fresh flowers in honor of Mrs. Ida.  Some southern crepe myrtles in a silver mint julep vase.

Lynn had these in a box and said they were Ida's glasses.

You can tell we don't have any little ones at the house anymore, wine glasses and tray on the bottom shelf.  Oops I forgot to close the drawer too.  I always notice things once I post the picture.

No more linens covering this pretty little lady.
