Neighbors and a Valentine dinner

We had our neighbors over for dinner. I just had to go with red, hearts and tulips.

Strawberries and champagne with dessert

I saved these bottles from our favorite lemonade. Each lady went home with a bottle of tulips. Wink, wink!

Next time you see these mini salt and pepper shakers, grab them all. I have enough for everyone to have their own, no passing needed.

I had champagne being chilled, but a guest brought a sweet red dessert wine that was perfect and bubbly.

Of course a little fleur de lis love, Mardi gras is on its way.

These are my most fun recent purchases, butter dome thingies. I found them at Ross over the holidays.

The kitchen island got in on the action too.

Blue hour about to creep in through the window. Candles lit and ready for dinner.

I always forget to take picture once everyone arrives. But our simple menu below.

I promised I would show you what I brought home from Laurie Anna's Shoppe.

Now remember it was more about a trip with my daughters, so there was more talking and less actual shopping. But at Laurie Anna's I found these bookends and narrow tray. Both are ceramic and blend with my Annie Sloan painted tables well.

At Paul Michael's shop I found a box of four nests and eggs, gave two away to Ann Marie and Melissa and brought two home for me. The other purchase from there I can't show you. It's for my Mom's lakehouse and she reads my blog. I want to surprise her.

Spring is around the corner. I have to tell you it was a good day and great deals. The most I paid was for the bookends ~ 15.95 for the pair!

I saved this little corner of Laurie Anna's Vintage store for last. She bought and refinished this little camper and has it displayed in her store.

Look it has it's own mailbox ! You almost missed it if you didn't look closely enough.

Totally filled inside.

Topped just perfectly.

Oh she must have been a happy camper too when she found this little guy.

I got to shop with two of my daughters. How wonderful, an hour plus ride there and back for great girl talk and shopping in between. My heart with pleasure filled.

When you enter Laurie Anna's Vintage Home store, you find lighting to fall in love with.

Table settings you could only dream of creating.

These are coffee cups I just fell in love with and more great lighting.

Another great table in room after room.

Everything pretty much whites, taupes and blues with touches of silver and burlap. Great combinations, don't you agree?

Great inspiration at every turn. I have some of those alpha eggs.

What did I tell you, great light fixtures everywhere you looked.

Her floral designer is so inspired by nature.

Creativity in every nook and cranny.

Little vingettes everywhere you look.

Best part you get to bring some of it home with you. I did!

Shopping day in Canton, Texas

Sorry giant flea market and pavillions, we only drove in from Dallas and went to two stores.

Our first stop always... Laurie Anna's Vintage Home.

Pretty much a feast for your eyes in every single corner of her huge shop. I love the coffee cups above, the insides were pale blue like the handles.

She has incredible lighting throughout the entire store. One of my daughter's wanted wired burlap ribbon, they were sold out. If you want first dibs on everything, get there on Thursday. They are only open one weekend a month on the First Monday Trade Days weekend.

Oh but we did leave Happy Campers. Stay tuned, more lovelies to come.

Last year we had ice and snow

... and we had the superbowl in town.

Now the first weekend in February, the pansies are happy.

The azalea bush is starting to bloom.

The fish are enjoying hanging out in the sunshine.

And I think the wild violets, that were given to me by a dear friend, are going to make it.

Little bunch of violets, they died off a bit, but are going to come back strong.

I'm sure we will have a few more cold snaps, but I am enjoying this mild winter. Headed to Canton, TX today too. In my next post watch for the great stuff we found at Laurie Anna's Vintage home.

Oohlala New Orleans

I'll start the architectural tour with St. Louis Cathedral.

Theses apartments surround the square in front to the church.

These great old buildings were down every side street. Great colors, wonderful wrought iron balconies. Some simple, some more ornate.

Another reason I have to go back is because I still haven't tried Court of Two Sister's yet, I hear the brunch is the greatest. I have been to Maspero's several times. My advice, share the sandwich.

The Hotel Monteleone, I did stay here once a long time ago, before the recent renovation.

Oh my the size of these ferns. The below was my favorite side street.

NOLA - New Orleans, Louisiana

I got to spend some time in a great old city. New Orleans, Louisiana is celebrating it's bicentennial this year. I think you can see all 200 years in this one photo. The 200 year old building on the right, 100 year old way back center as the city expanded. The modern day Mardi Gras beads hanging from the light post, signs and the 2012 security lights.

I know the sign says 1807, but it was after the war of 1812 that Andrew Jackson took the city from the British. The actual city is much older than 200 years.

It was founded as a french colony in 1718.

A feast for your eyes and your stomach.

Yes, I did eat all my crawfish etouffee and the onion rings were great too. Oh and don't forget to order the bread pudding for dessert. I didn't forget.

I brought home some of these too. I will share.

I thought about it. The Hurricane will have to wait until my next trip.

Arabian Nights and a Mardi Gras Ball

The theme for the Ball was Arabian Nights.

There were "camels". One of our friends greated us at the entrance tent in her "costume" for the night.

Each Krewe member decorated their table for the night. It was fun to wander around and see all the different table decorations. Some were very elaborate.

Yep you are correct, table number 79. This was a huge party. Live band for dancing the night away and a full buffet breakfast after midnight.

To start the party off the harem paraded in throwing beads of course.

Our very brave and beautiful hostess for the night was part of the belly dance team that started off the night. She (in purple) did a wonderful job by the way and said they had been practicing since June.

The harem then paraded around the dance floor, right after they announced the King and the party was underway.

If you ever get the chance you have to go to one of these events. I'm still afraid of New Orleans Mardi Gras though. Let's just say it's not on my bucket list of things to do.

Mardi Gras Ball

Lucky us got invited to a Mardi Gras Ball in Alexandria, LA. It was so much fun and wow the work that must go into one of these events. No wonder they need a whole "krewe" to make these things happen. I made and took favors for the guests at our table. Mardi Gras Pins. They looked great on the guys tux lapels.

I bought the fleur de lis charms at Michael's. ~ My Michael's craft store no longer will take one Michael's coupon and a Joanne's coupon in the same transaction. I'm a little mad at Michael's for that. But, of course I just drop in for back to back visits and get that extra 40% off. Or take someone along that can stand in line behind me to make a second purchase. Bit of a hassle, anyway I digress.

I had all the ribbon and the peacock feathers already. Tied them together with florist tape in little bundles. They looked great against a black tux.

Now for the before and after of me. My Mom was the photographer, sorry for a bit of a blur. Next time I will make her use the timer to help cut down on her shake. Her shake is partly due to her CIDP, which thankfully is in remission right now.

Nothing Bundt Cakes!

Do you have one of these bakeries close to you? Nothing Bundt Cakes are yummy. This is the bundtlett, a mini cake. They also make their signature huge ones and a mini cupcake sized one.

I enjoyed this one with the napkins I am using now.

Nothing says love like red velvet cake, cream cheese frosting and a fork. Share one with your sweetheart. Or just all by yourself.

Church stained glass window

My husband was raised in the church that this window came out of. When they built their present location they removed and sold the stained glass windows from the original downtown church. My in-laws purchased two. My husband's brother has one and my husband brought ours home last week. It is quite large. For now it is here and I think it goes pretty well here. Even picks up colors from the curtain that I already had.

It is a simple craftsman style to me. I wish I could find a picture of the windows in the actual church. I know it is close to a hundred years old. Calvary Baptist in Alexandria, LA.

Nickie has had it for years and had a light behind it on her fireplace hearth. She used it as a night light. I am holding it in place with floral gum. Two pieces at the top behind the wood and two pieces on each bottom corner. It will not budge and Texas doesn't have big earthquakes, so I guess we are OK.

Love this picture with all the lights off and just natural light shining through. Shows off the real color and beauty. Sigh.

Edited ~ Nickie told me that the church was built in 1925. So this window is 87 years old. She said when they purchased them, they were not framed out and they had to have that done. Actually, they only purchased one and years later a friend gave them one of theirs. Lucky us, each son is able to have one. She also says next time I see her, (next weekend) she has a picture of the window hanging in the church. I can't wait to see that.

Nested Tables and AS Paint

My fourth Annie Sloan project. A set of two nested tables. I used a yummy color called CoCo by Annie Sloan. No distressing and a rubbed wax finish. Big, huge improvment.

Sorry about the before pictures, poor light and old camera. The tables screwed totally apart for easy painting. These tables are probably close to 30 years old and some of the first pieces of furniture we bought when we were newlyweds. They have seen a lot of wear and tear.

I have re-painted four small tables and some book-ends and still have half a can of this paint left. I am seriously thinking about kitchen cabinet painting. Just still contemplating a color.

A little bit of Mardi Gras in my life

My Louisiana roots have me thinking about Mardi Gras season. Most Louisianians put up Mardi Gras decorations right after Christmas.

My mantel has my small collection of my favorite Mardi Gras things.

You just about need anything purple, gold and green. A few fleur de lis here and there and done.

A fun jester sits amongst the lights and greenery. He was a gift from my sister in Baton Rouge.

A New Orleans photographer's work, Johnny Donnels, fits in well. The priest print is called "morning meditations" and the smaller original photograph is "the eye of the storm".

I had to get creative with this area, because I "put away" the framed artwork I had hanging there before Christmas. I "put it away" so well, I can't find it. I'm sure it will show up.

The festive martini glass was a gift from a Louisiana best friend and crowns always work well and help add that touch of royalty.

Very fun and festive and I get to enjoy some of my Christmas lights just a while longer.

Starting the year with food!

I just had to share this recipe that I used last night at a friend's New Year's Eve party. Cheddar Bacon Ranch Pulls.

Thank-you Pinterest and PlainChicken.

You can do it too, it is as easy as 1, 2 ~~~7. The hardest part was cutting the sourdough bread round.

You start with this.

You slice both ways in one inch strips, do not cut through the bottom. You load with cheddar cheese and bacon. I used turkey bacon.

You bake and for the final 10 minutes of bake time you drizzle with ranch flavored butter. Pull apart and enjoy. There is also a cinnamon roll version. I found it here. Thanks Plainchicken.

Recipe

1 unsliced loaf of (round is preferable) sourdough bread
8-12 oz cheddar cheese, thinly sliced
3 oz bag Oscar Mayer Real Bacon bits
1/2 cup butter, melted
1 Tbsp Ranch dressing mix

Using a sharp bread knife cut the bread going both directions. Do not cut through the bottom crust. Place slices of cheese in between cuts. Sprinkle bacon bits on bread, making sure to get in between cuts. Mix together butter and Ranch dressing mix. Pour over bread. Wrap in foil the entire loaf in foil and place on a baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes. Unwrap. Bake for an additional 10 minutes, or until cheese is melted.

I just made up a batch of these for friend gifts. All you need is one can of black-eyed peas. Trappey's is the best. (Kroger was sold out). Wrap, ribbon and a few poppers or a party blower would be great. I got the idea here at Miss Janice's.

Also, I thought you would want to see the napkins I am using. Poor Mary.

Then shopping yesterday, I saw this ornament and decided to re-arrange my kitchen stuff. I had everything already, the ornament is the only new item. Check out my before and afters and now my kitchen has a new look for Christmas. Bright and cheery every where you look. Christy basically uses red, white and black.

Pecan Tassies

Every Christmas I make about 8 batches of these little yummies. Easy and terrific tassies.

I even made them a little bit healthier this year (if that is possible) but I used half regular flour and half whole wheat flour.

Louisiana pecans ya'll.

Find a Pampered Chef rep and buy one of these wooden tools. Only way to smash the dough ball to a perfect shape and saves tons of time.

Pecan Tassies

Pastry

combine

1 cup flour

1 stick butter (softened)

3 ozs of cream cheese (I used reduced fat)

Roll into 1 inch balls and press into mini cupcake pan

Filling

1 egg (whisk)

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup brown sugar

dash of salt

3 tablespoons melted butter

1 cup chopped pecans

Fill each mini muffin cup and bake in a 350 degree oven for 15-17 minutes until they begin to brown. Makes 24.

Eat, gift them and enjoy!

T~shirt blanket and college memories all sewn into one

It might look easy, but it is a lot of work.

The first step was to cut t-shirt squares. We used 12 X 12 inch pieces. Then numbered them once we got them in the locations Lynley wanted them.

Next, Lynley ironed a light weight fusible fabric to back of each square to keep them flat and make them thick and easy to sew through. The three inch crimson pieces of fabric were sewn around each square side and then long crimson pieces attached the five rows of three squares together. Then I had to sew two long side strips on either side edge and the top part of the blanket was finished.

We used a piece of flannel fabric for the back, sewed the front and back together to form a huge pillow case and filled the inside with a flat piece of poly fill.

We tacked the front and back randomly to hold the poly fill in place.

I finished by sewing the bottom opening shut and we called it done.

We even got a Beat Texas weekend t-shirt in the mix.

It is warm and comfy and we fight over who gets to be under it when we are on the couch. Hubby wants me to make a king sized one for our master bed. Uh - no. You couldn't pay me enough to make another one. It was a labor of love. We figure about 10 hours total to make one twin sized blanket.

Little suprises around the house

I think part of decorating at Christmastime is having a new "something" to look at in every room. Even if you have had things since your first Christmas on your own or just found it last year, it surprises you to see them again. The old things sometimes have the best memories attached to them.

Let's wander around the house.

First up and most important - the Reason for the Season.

The barn is setting on an iron tray. The nativity set was a gift from my mother-in-law years ago.

Around the kitchen I have a display of "Santa comes to Town". Below is the first one of the series. I made a politcal stand and quit buying them when they started to light them. I'm sure my little statement really hurt the company.

My first holy family. When we were first married and I didn't have one I went to one of those Home Interiors parties. Do they still have those parties? This was all I could afford, it was probably about six dollars. Love it still.

Did anyone else go through a counted cross stitch phase like me. Obviously it was around 1979.

Only took four days

I was under pressure to get the tree up and decorated by the weekend. So I can spend all weekend shopping and baking. Plus we have a Christmas party to attend on Saturday.

Monday night in the freezing, windy cold weather, Lynley and I headed out in search of this year's perfect tree. We found it quickly, the cold weather helped with that.

Here it is all naked. You know the routine, pull out all your boxes and check the lights. I even bought extra lights this year, I still don't think I have enough.

I started with the topper and my new red glitter angels on high look great with a red and green bow attached.

Then added all of our glass ornaments. I don't have little ones around anymore or yet again, so breakable it is for our tree. Only one broke during the decorating. I confess, it was me.

I wish I could show close ups of them all, they are all fun and bright against the lights.

At the bottom is the tree skirt. I get to look at it for a bit because soon will be covered with wrapped gifts.

After I looked at the decorated tree, I removed the ribbon streamers. They took away from the ornaments, lights and shape of the tree.

Yep, much better without the ribbon. Once again the perfect tree (we say that every year).

There is a party right?

I love setting the formal table at Christmastime. I surprise myself every night when I get home and think "oh there is a party tonight!" Then realize "no, it is just another Tuesday night."

My girls keep telling me less is more. So I went with less this year at the center of the table. But, it just wasn't enough.

Here is less.

Actually I added the saucers under the candles. I was afraid of the wax getting on the table runner, which I love and was a half price find at an after Christmas sale.

The saucer below is from my husband's church that he grew up going to in Louisiana. They have Wednesday night suppers. Once upon a time they used real plates with the church name on them. I have a cup and saucer that his mother gave me.

I just still thought the table needed a little bit more of something.

So I added fresh greenery to the center of the table.

Just to let you know, the little tripod above (bottom center) works really well with my new camera. I now need to remember to remove it from the picture when not in use.

Tadaa! less is more.

I have a tea cup collection and I used some of them on my table. I just rounded up any with green or red in the pattern.

Silver, white and glitter

My Christmas mantel did not get a makeover this year. It is a repeat from last year, I just added more bling. First up, Santa, he just catches my eye with those baby blue ones. Santa nestled front and center. He is a Mark Robert's Santa.

I just layered the greenery and lights. Next went in the white poinsettias. Then I added silver and glitter. The Pier One reindeer were kind of the inspiration for the whole thing.

I love my wrap around mantel. It faces both the den and the kitchen.

My daughter Lynley made the wreath last year.

The silver beaded bells were the only new addition this year.

Someone was leaving him in an old office at my daughter's work place.

She asked to bring him home and then she painted him blue.

I think everyone enjoyed Elvis (the young Elvis) and the day.

Bathroom finished one day before company arrives

Yep, that is correct. I laid the final strip of baseboard, caulked and touch up painted and family will be arriving in one day for Thanksgiving.

Here are bits and pieces and then the reveal.

The wall color ~~second one~~ is Techno Gray. The first gray/grey was way too white and glaring when you walked in. The room needed a touch of color and there is a bit of green in this paint. Which flows with the rest of the house as well.

I custom made the shower curtain. I am a tad bit paticular with shower curtains and I need them floor to ceiling. It takes three shower rods. One for the topper, one for the panels and one for the clear vinyl shower curtiain hidden behind the panels that slides to make the shower functional.

Just adore the new honeycomb white floor. New baseboards helped update the area too.

But that makes for a bad blogger. Sorry, we have been working on the honey do lists ~~and I discovered Pinterist!~~ We will be having 26 for Thanksgiving dinner. All out of town guests. The family will be dispersed between Coppell, Richardson and McKinney, Texas. Everyone will be here for Thursday dinner. I will try to remember to keep my camera going.

So below, of course, the napkins I will be using and a sneak peek at just one of my projects. I bought the new Wilton Armetale napkin holder with the weight for an outside table.

New shower curtains I made for the updated bathroom. Lynley and I tiled the floor and painted. I put in new baseboards. It is fabulous, I can't wait to show you. With the "labor" costs we saved by DIY, I am going out today for a new camera. Yay us, yay me.

DIY project happy dance doing am I. And you will see why.

Pulled up two layers of old linoleum.

Lay and grout tile with a pale grey grout. Decide walls now need an updated color.

Who knew there are soooo many hues of grey.

This was about a three day project for baby girl and I. The details took another week. Details being new wall paint, new baseboards, sew new shower curtains and re-accessorize.

After... you just have to come back. I bought a new camera and it will be used for the reveal!

I'm dreaming of a Laurie Anna's Vintage Christmas

You will be too after seeing what Ann Marie and I got to have fun wondering through and purchasing pretties in last weekend.

Laurie Anna's Vintage in located in Canton, TX. Located off Interstate 20 between Shreveport, LA and Dallas, TX. Home of one of the countries largest flea markets. The market is called First Monday Trade Days. Because it is only open the weekend before the first Monday of every Month. Since the first on November fell on a Tuesday. The market was November 3,4,5 and 6th. And Laurie Anna's shop is not on the flea market grounds anymore, but in her own location. You still have to go during Trade Days. That is the only time she is open too. But get there you must. Next trade days are December 1st - 4th.

Every inch, every table just filled brimming over with lovely white and snow.

Iron, greenery, trees, burlap and tin.

Bed scenes decorated and ready for a cuddly nap.

These marvelous soaps filled the entire space with marvelous scent.

Tablescape after tablescape each as beautiful as the first.

Light fixtures and chandeliers galore.

Just heart warming and packed with shoppers and we were there late in the day. I heard some ladies who had come back, that you couldn't even move around that morning. If you get the chance and are around the Dallas area on the weekend before the first Monday of the month. This is a must see.

November is here and I am Thankful

I am thankful for family. You might learn a little bit more about me in this post.

My Dad ~ I don't know how to scan pictures, so here are my thoughts.

My Dad was with me through 17 years. He passed away from heart disease. I wish I had the chance to know him as an adult child. Love you Dad and remember our last hugs and kisses.

My Father in law, took over. What a great inspirational man. He called me his bead counter daughter, with endearment. I think this wonderful Baptist reared man was enjoying his Catholic dauther-in-law.

What a role model. Single Mom at 42 with five children and the youngest with Downs Syndrome
I still can't imagine how hard it must have been for her. She is amazing!
We are displaying the jewelry she brought to Arkansas on our family trip this past summer. (Bracelet, hair tie.)

Nickie is my husband's Mom. What a gentle truly, southern lady she is. Born, raised and lived her whole life in one town, Alexandria, LA. She has shown me gracious, virtuous, unselfish traits to admire.

I think she is happiest around her Grandchildren.

We wouldn't have these grand-daughters though without this wonderful man.
Ray Lynn Kees, loving husband, do everything Dad, provider and rock of the family.

My Two Sisters! How they have enriched my life, along with my brothers.

People really can't believe that they never went through the terrible teens or ever gave us one ounce of "trouble". But REALLY they didn't. (they were raised on faith and family, see above) I love that we were known as the most strict parents in town. It worked out OK, I think.

Really, I took them to work for the Susan G. Komen Bake Sale.

You can tell people it was a lot of work if you want to lie.

You just scoop Nutella, about half a teaspoon full (Nutella at Costco, two large jars for the price of one small jar at your local grocery) in the already baked Fillo shells (which you keep a supply of in your freezer, for emergencies) and then top with chopped pecans (that your mother-in-law gave you) and voila. I'm thinking toasted coconut sprinkled on top at Christmas would look like snow covered chocolate!

You impress the socks of people. Tell them it's Lori's secret family recipe.

PS ~ I did bake these for about 7 minutes in a 350 degree oven, I thought it would melt the Nutella a bit, but no change, so skip that part.

Just me and Annie

I finally broke open my new can of Annie Sloan paint. My first two projects turned out pretty good. I still don't have the layering technique down really well yet.

I have been using this old sewing machine stand as a bedside table. Perfect height and size. But, I didn't like the look of it. I bought it maybe 15 years ago for $25.00 at a garage sale and really used it for sewing back then.

This step stool/table is a Pier One purchase from long ago too. Scratched and water stained and ready for some Annie Sloan paint.

I purchased a new color, CoCo at Round Top, TX. See here. Lily Lane Home from Waco, TX was set up and selling all colors. Robin gave me some wonderful tips and a secret that I will be telling everyone at the end of this post. So the secret will be out of the ~~Annie Sloan~~ can.

Here is just one coat of CoCo below. It does what everyone says, paints on easily and dries super quick.

As soon as the first coat dried I added a second. I really think the second coat brought out the true Coco color. Hubby calls it grey. It really is more of latte color to me.

Then a tea stain layer of Ralph Lauren I already had.

Here are two practice examples that Robin from Lily Lane Home told me about. Left side is tea stain and rubbed off while wet to show wood. Right side is one coat of slightly dry AS paint and then a water brushed finish no rub. It gives a white washed look.

And here are the two pieces waxed, distressed and waxed once again. Robin's tip was to wax first then sand edges and then wax one final time. I used SP Johnson paste wax and hand rubbed.

Now the secret if you haven't already heard. Annie in person, will be coming on a US tour in March. She has scheduled one of her stops to be in Texas. You can check with Lily Lane Home for more information as they hear more. Also, Robin tipped me off on a new color in the making, Barcelona Orange. It is being tweeked, they released a first run but weren't happy enough with the results.

I'm happy with my results. Two more tables are waiting in the wings for their turn.

My first can of Annie Sloan paint

Now what to do... I found a whole truck load of her paint at Round Top, TX Antique Week.
Robin from Lily Lane Home in Waco had set up this booth. She gave me lots of tips too.

I think my project this weekend will include a few tables and just maybe my mantel.

I bought a new color CoCo and the newest accessory. A pour lid. Lily said that everyone was complaining about the paint hardening around the top of the can. They now have these lids they sell.

She said to give a piece a distressed look you can paint one coat and then sprinkle with water and wipe. Or if you want to sand paper the piece, do that after you paint and wax.

A new color is coming soon called Barcelona Orange. She has ordered it, but it is not here yet.

Hmm... Lily Lane Home doesn't have a blog yet, but you can find the store in Waco in Spice Village.
Robin gave me no discount for the referral. She is a very sweet lady and I told her I would let people know where she is, tell her you saw her stuff here if you pay her a visit.

The Big Fat mirror project

Redo a bathroom, save 4 x 6 foot mirror 'cause your daughter wants to use it. Look at mirror in garage for six months. Buy wood and look at that for three months. Paint, cut, glue and done.

She hammered it up a bit, primed and painted.

Measure and head back to Home Depot because you need two more inches off each side and you don't own one of those fancy smancy saw things, like Mandi does. Take your super cute daughter along and smile at the nice guy and ask to "please, can you cut some more wood off?"

Glue was fun! Let dry for about three days. Let sit in the dining room for a week more, just because you are afraid when you stand it up, everything will slide off.

Simple project complete in 1,2....199 steps.

BIG FAT MIRROR

Notice I wore black for the picture, very slimming. Left the room messy just to be more real life.

See how huge, heavy and wonderful.

Fall Bridal Shower Brunch

Six hostesses, lots of lanterns and pumpkins.
Three Moms and our daughters hosted a bridal shower brunch for Candace. All four girls cheered together and have remained close friend.

Warning a ton of pictures, hope you make it to the end.

The little white lanterns served as place cards and favors.

Here are the four high school buds. Ann Marie is my daughter, in the orange dress, and then next to her, the first one of them to be expecting is on the right, Jessica. Claire on the left and the party was at her Mom's house.

Candace loves animal print, so we added a bit in the ribbon on the roses. Old frames painted white made a great accent at the bottom of our table vignettes.

Even the fountain got in on the action.

Colleen's gorgeous home was a fabulous back drop for everything.

Candace again, I think she enjoyed herself. You may recognize her, after high school, she went on to be a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and a L.A. Laker Girl. Fabulous dancer!

Fall napkin primped for a party

We needed a touch of fall for a brunch coming up. I played around with twine, doillies and silk leaves.

The 32 count doilies, shear silk leaves and twine all found at dollar tree. We ended up not using the silk leaf at the party. Plain simple doily looked best.

More on the bridal shower coming soon. I'm still washing linens and putting party stuff back where it needs to be stored until the next one.

On a side note...please RSVP always. We did have place cards and the lanterns that were their party favors. So about four last minute guests did not receive a lantern. We made due with putting their names one a small white gourd. Also, be nice to your hostesses by responding. Chair/table rentals and food amounts need to be firmed up at least a week before. And once you respond be on TIME. For our 10:30 brunch, we began serving about 11:15. As dessert was being served, two ladies arrived at 11:45!

What are your thoughts on tardy, no show or show and not RSVP guests? I do totally understand things can come up that make you miss the party. Am I being to finicky?

Pumpkins and a bridal shower

Another best friend of the Ann Marie's is getting married. Weather now is perfect in Texas, so we planned an outdoor brunch party. Idea from Venessa and Heather at the Picket Fence HERE.

This is my dollar tree white pumpkin project and how we used them.

Step One - buy all the carveable dollar tree pumpkins that are left to buy. Sorry if the store near me is sold out.

Paint with whatever white paint you have leftover around the house. I used a sponge brush and applied two coats. Dries really fast.

Use them to your hearts delight!

Here they are on mixed in for our centerpieces at the bridal shower brunch.

Little bunch of violets

Little bunch of violets I picked them dear for you.

Sorry, that was a song we used to sing at my sorority.

But it sure fits in with this post. My best friend Jane's Mom, Betty is a wonderful gardener and she saw our garden one day and said we just had to have some of her violets.

Betty called once the weather cooled a bit and said she had some ready for us.

She even prettied the sprigs she pulled up with some of her zinnias. This women is in her early 80's and has the most wonderful flower beds and some vegetable gardens too! I was amazed.

Betty says these will bunch up and spread. I believe her ! She had them in several different beds around her back yard.

We are trying some in a pot too, I hope they survive. Betty provided some blood/bone meal, that is what it said on the jar, for fertilizing too. Isn't she wonderful. I'll follow up with these little bunches of violets next summer to let you know how it turns out.

Oh and that sorority song I started with ... any of my sister's out there recognize the song?

Garden Antiques Vintage - another friend at Round Top/Warrenton

I was happy to meet up with Teresa from Garden Antiques Vintage at the Round Top Antique week. Her booth was down the road in Warrenton. She is right behind Zapp Hall. Her displays were fabulous too.

So what came home with me?

We all agreed on our trip to Round Top that it was more about the conversations and just hanging out together. But, I did bring a few little treasures home with me.

Two things were on my list a metal stool for outside by hubbies potting bench.

Can you believe the one above was at the very first booth we stopped at. Marked $40.00, I asked if they would take $30.00. Mine. It is even better in person.

I call these my Americana moments. Rusty wonderful metal case, the price on the tag was all faded out, so I knew he had had it for a while. I think it said $15.00, he said he could do $13.00, I asked how about $10.00. Mine.

I think the case will be fun filled with coke and ice on the fourth of July. The red little metal chair I can see stacked with Christmas presents by the tree, outside with a plant on top, front porch little chair or maybe in the kitchen with tea towels hanging from her arms. This had no price, I could see top dollar because we were in a real industrial part of Warrenton. When I asked the guy how much, he said "for that expensive chair", I knew then I wouldn't be taking her home. But, when he said $10.00... Mine.

These are really tiny, I guess finger bowls. One is cracked and I will use it as a business card holder at work. He wanted $20.00 for all three, but with the cracked one he said he would take $15.00. Mine.

Not on my list, but I have wanted angle wings for some time. I think I may white wash them before hanging them on a wall inside the house.

This was my final purchase of the trip. I wanted you to see a close up of this plant holder. See the middle section, it is the side cap from an aisle seat at a New York Theatre. At least that is the story I was told and I was sold.

Stay tuned... I bought my first can of Annie Sloan chalk paint. CoCo !
The booth owner told me I had to have the newest thing out the plastic pour spout sealer thingy.

Next up more on Chalk Paint and tips. (Which I will be trying out this weekend on several projects.) I hope it is as great as everyone says.

I almost forgot, my sister Jill brought us all a little sussie. From Red Door in Baton Rouge. She reminded my sister Joanie and I of our own Aunt Carole. Every time we had a family get together, oh every year or sometimes every other year (she is in Minnesota we lived in Louisiana), Aunt Carole would always pull out surprises from her suitcase. What a great memory and one we now can continue from her inspiration. Love you, Aunt Carole.

Junk Gypsy and a filming

While shopping at Round Top, TX I wandered away from the group for a few minutes. When I got back Kayla, Melissa, Joanie and Ann Marie were being filmed in the Junk Gypsy tent in Warrenton, TX. They are going to have a show on HGTV soon. Really hope they will pick our girls for one of the segments. One of the questions was "how did you find this place?" of course not to be left out I jumped in front of the group and said "I brought them here first". On my disclosure form the guy had written across the bottom of the page.... lady who jumped in front.

Lovely Blog friend ladies who should have been at Round Top

Because of this blogger I went to Round Top with a dough bowl on my list to find. They were either too expensive or not the right size. But "K" has a savvy style that makes the ordinary extraordinary.

I have to admit I am jealous. I added the below picture with the above because these two ladies have actually met in person, the flesh, shook hands, hugged. Not fair.
One of them takes any painted piece of iron, wood.. you name it and changes the color almost with every season change. This chair reminded me that "D" would make it look fabulous. The chair did come home with me. I see Christmas presents stacked on her (the chair) not "D".

They both have incredible talent and have used the below amazing Annie Sloane paint on wonderful projects. Yes, a whole booth full of paint! I finally got to purchase some and have the newest attachment for the can. Just on the market. I'll show you with my final haul post. I got a new color too, CoCo.

I can't walk by a pig of any kind now without thinking about "L". She would have grabbed these little cement ones.

This next lovely lady mentioned how hard it is to find purple transferware. She was at Brimfield recently and she was right. I only saw about three pieces at Round Top. We also only shopped about 1 / 10 of the fields.

She brings a smile to my face with every post and what an amazing wood crafting, cutting, designing woman. She creates like crazy while keeping up with her brood of butt munchers. Yep, that is what she calls them. I haven't figured that one out yet. Also, she always gives you a warning not to look at ~~admire~~ her hubbies behind either.

Round Top, Texas Antique Week (s)

Antique Week "officially" starts on a Tuesday. But, the week before most vendors are set up and selling. My friend Jane invited me to meet a bunch of Baton Rouge ladies at Round Top and shop with them about four years ago. I was hooked and have gone back every year since.

There is no way to explain Round Top you just have to experience it. Bucket list ladies. Just like Brimfield is on my list to attend one day. A girl can dream.

This little boat was dry docked all the way from Coney Island, New York, I think I may have taken a ride in that one when I was there as a child.

Now, can't you just imagine yourself here. Join me in shopping and fun below.

Ann Marie bought a suitcase from this vendor, when the vendor found out they were all teachers she told them each to choose a pillowcase for free!

We got there - Round Top Part One

It took us right under four hours to drive. We decided to leave at 5AM. Dallas to Giddings, TX and then check into our hotel. Twenty more minutes and we were at the fields.

We took and filled two pick em up trucks and an SUV. This was our first rest stop on the way down.

Here is our group of girls (notice empty shopping bags, cute clothes, clean feet). It is just 10AM. Due to the Texas drought there was lots of dust and dry grass blowing around. By the end of the day we were happy, tired, glowing and coated with five - six layers of Texas dirt.

Let the shopping, bidding, buying and lauging begin. Fun trailers everywhere that the vendors live in for two weeks.

HGTV was there and more on our filming later. One of our group said that Nate Burkis had talked about Round Top. No Nate sightings for us though. I don't know if he was there or not.

If you have had to suffer through our Texas summer this year, you might as well break a record.

Today we reached 103, which broke todays daily record. Below is the forecast for tomorrow.

Also today we tied 1980 for 69 days of over 100 degree temps for the summer.

Here is our forecast.

Yay... we are breaking the record by two days! Boo, you should see my electric bill and dried up yard.

I wish I was our fish in the pond, they seem happy.

Surely, the end of this has to be in sight! Bring on fall temps please.

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, but which wall

I promised I would show you where my new round mirrors ended up.

Here is the story line.

Hubby and decorator daughter (to be called DD) asked me "what was up with my big blank wall in the dining room."? Hey, I was in the formulating ideas stage. Gimme a break.

I bought some IKEA mirrors, rearranged some things, then I did this and DD said no, no. Mirrors too far apart and too high.

Then I made a million more nail holes in the wall and added an additional layer of something with texture. Once again I got an absolutely not from DD. But I do agree with where she and twin daughters decided to put the Mossy K. See HERE.

So we ~~they~~ decided the best place for the mirrors was on a tall narrow piece of space right by the front door as you walk into the house. Group decisions work much better at my house. A side effect of having three daughters I guess. Any of you with all boys, do they comment or care about what you decorate with?

Artsy picture first. Just in case you are standing behind the candelabra on the wall, this is what they look like from that vantage point. Can you see the stripe painted walls? Same exact color paint, just one is flat and one is a satin finish. See that project here.

DD daughter is happy and I am too. I always have liked a mirror by the door as you are going out of the house.

Now big huge wall is back to the way it was when we moved in. But of course the DD or and the twins agree I need to have these photo's framed in larger black frames. Bye, bye gold 1980's style. One day there WILL be a buffet along that wall too.

My sister turns 50 this month!

I say that gleefully, because she is finally joining me and my decade. So we had a dinner when a bunch of the family was in town for the LSU-Oregon game. Geaux Tigers! The win over Oregon began the weekend and her party topped it off. Enjoy some fun pictures below.

A friend of mine called and said she had 50 red hats. I said bring them on over and we used them to decorate the front yard. They were supposed to be propped on the dowels but tropical storm Lee was in Louisiana and blowing winds all the way to Dallas, (no rain though). We had to slide the hats down the sticks so they wouldn't blow away. But great fun when Joanie arrived. There is a club you can join when you turn fifty, I think it is called the Red Hat Club... I'm not a member, but I hear they have fun get togethers.

I got to bring out some of my fancy stuff.

I love my silver tray that I sprayed with chalkboard paint. The chalkboard markers from Hobby Lobby are highly recommended and they wipe off just like chalk.

I used my ice bucket that we found at Round Top Flea Market. Did I mention we are going back the end of this month?! My Mom has one of these ice buckets, I begged for it, but she isn't ready to give it up yet. So I was so glad when Joanie and I spied the one below at Round Top. Now she and my sister Jill can fight Mom for hers.

As the evening got late the vinyl 50 confetti decorations got moved from the tables to our foreheads. They looked really cute on my niece and a friend.

Not one picture of the birthday girl. Once the party starts I always forget to take pictures.

Moss, more moss and a huge K

I just happened to have left over moss from a wedding that I recently decorated. The huge K is from Joanne's and I did use a coupon, making it only $5.00.

You need lots of moss and tons of hot glue. I think I used about twenty sticks. Just pull the moss apart and start glueing it anywhere there is a cardboard spot. Messy, but super simple project.

I first placed it here because I thought the mirrors needed a little something else. Remember I told you I have a daughter with an interior design degree. First she turned up her nose when I walked through the door with the cardboard K, then she really hated where I placed it.

Now it resides here...

(Don't tell her that it really is better way up on the top of the armoire)

She moved the mirrors too, more on that later.

I K E A towel apron project

These little beauties are soft, useful and cost under two dollars to complete. I am using them for party favors. Final apron picture at the end of the post.

I cut the ribbon cords in 22 inch strips for the ties.

I sewed each tie 4 inches down from the top of each towel.

The towels came in four patterns. Once finished I tied them into a little bundle.
You flip down the four inch top margin and tie it around your waist.

Be prepared for the most amazing before and after of a girls dorm room. Before I start let me say that I did buy my girls new comforters and desk supplies for their dorm rooms. Plus one of those super cute little refrigerators and a new umbrella.

This Mom went over the top for her youngest daughter's dorm room. The older daughter, Shelbi, helped shop and set everything up, she cheered with one of my twins. Thought you would want to know the connections, because I feel really special that I know them. One, they are great people and two, they are great designers. Shelbi said I had to give her Mom all the credit. But they both have the eye for design, like mother like daughter is so true here.

Grapevine Lake, Texas ~ last Friday night

One cool way to beat the 100 degree heat! Get invited for a ride on our best friend's boat.

Houses on the lake aren't allowed to have docks? Our group headed to the marina from Coppell. I guess it helps to keep the land surrounding the lake natural looking. Like the the above picture.

We headed out on a Friday about 7:00 PM, still about 102 degrees outside.

It is a pretty large sized lake, the Gaylord Texan Resort is at one end.

Yes, I will be glad to live in the guest house at this place. I promise to be quiet, you won't even know I am there.

We headed to the "beach". You just anchor and float.

Our gourmet dinner. Hey, those are chick-fil-a nuggets! We went all out.

Sunset with friends and finished off with fireworks over the Gaylord Resort. Great way to start our weekend.

I love the blue boat! We are keeping our calendar free every Friday night, just in case we get a call to cool off and start another weekend the right way!

Burlap curtains

One panel of my daughter's curtains are up. Please don't look too closely we are amateurs.

They are nine foot burlap panels with a twenty inch topper. She used these iron holders to clip them to. The toppers have triple pleats across the top.

They are lined of course. I know that is an extra step and expense, but it is so worth it. The true color of the fabric you choose shows and they do not fade.

She just has to hang three more and she we are done. My sewing machine and sewing basket are back home now. Grand-mothers if you are reading this, she and her sister both need sewing kits.

Saturday morning project

You know I was having a dinner party last Saturday, so I just had to paint the hardware on the front door, while Lynn painted a fresh coat of seal black on the inside.

Took us about maybe an hour. Done and went food shopping for the party!

I thought I was done, over, no more collecting and then sigh, this little Scottish wench just called out to me to be taken home. Found her in Louisiana at my Mom's 75th birthday celebration in Breaux Bridge.

I'm done, finished....well maybe. Anyone need to borrow them let me know.

The big blank wall

Do you hate or love a big blank wall? I was told by hubby and (interior decorator daughter) that something needed to be done. They are both out of town this weekend, so here goes.

First ~ the wall. Raining in Texas this morning YAY. Sorry pictures so dark.

Then add chairs ~ two dining room chairs and pillows.

Add a zinc table and impromtu bar area.

Love my thrifty find of the week, the mirrored cake/anything plateau with the black and gold harlequin pattern. Hoblobby $50.00 for 90 percent off, $5.00 gotta holla.

Finish off with round, tiled mirrors. IKEA clearance.

Great mirrors with a band of mirrored tiles surrounding the edges.

I went with two. Total make-over $24.98. Yes the mirrors were on sale for $9.99.

Hmmm, I think I am going to drape the table. Maybe next weekend.
